Exhibition Key Visual
■「The Scent of Tatami and Height Marks on Wooden Pillars」 — A Nostalgic and Fresh Encounter with Showa-Era Living
The Showa era, which began in 1926 and ended in 1989, would have reached its 100th year in 2025 — if it had continued. It was a time of tremendous change: from the devastation of World War II through postwar recovery, rapid economic growth, and the bubble economy. Alongside societal shifts, people’s lives transformed dramatically.
This exhibition focuses on 1965 (Showa 40), a year in the heart of Japan’s postwar economic boom, offering a look into the lives and society of the time. From the construction of Tokyo Tower in 1958 to milestone events like the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the 1970 Osaka Expo (Japan World Exposition), Japan’s rise was marked by iconic moments. During this era of prosperity — spurred by economic booms such as the Jimmu, Iwato, Olympic, and Izanagi booms — Japan’s GNP became the second largest in the world by 1968, just behind the United States. Black-and-white televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines, known as the “three sacred treasures,” became household dreams and gradually spread to homes across the country.
Inside the exhibition space, visitors can step into a full-scale recreation of a typical home from 1965. This immersive set was designed by Anri Jojo, renowned art director and winner of the Japan Academy Award for Best Art Direction for films such as Always: Sunset on Third Street. Visitors can also explore a history zone curated by Akira Ikegami, director of the Kadokawa Musashino Museum, and a section dedicated to Showa-era play culture, curated by Hiroshi Aramata — including a space where you can actually play with toys from the Showa period.
